Az ortodox vallás legfontosabb ünnepe a Húsvét. A Nagypénteki körmenet, Krisztus szimbolikus temetése pedig ennek az egyik legfontosabb mozzanata. Korfu város sok hívet és érdeklődőt vonz ezen a napon, nem csoda, hiszen összesen 33 díszes körmenet vonul végig az Óváros utcáin. Az ünnepi mise után, filharmonikus zenekar kíséretében elindul a virágokkal feldíszített szimbolikus koporsó, az Epitáfiosz, majd a Listont megkerülve újra megérkezik a kiindulási pontra. A filharmonikusokon kívül énekkarok, kultúr- és egyéb egyesületek, a vöröskereszt tagjai, a cserkész szövetség, a helyi politikai elit tagjai is felvonulnak. Az első körmenet két órakor indul az Új Erődben található templomból, míg az utolsó este tíz órakor a Spilia városrészben található székesegyházból.
Az idei húsvéthoz borongós, esős időjárás társult, így a Nagypénteknek is valódi gyászos hangulatot kölcsönzött. A korfui Húsvét országszerte híres, évente több ezer látogató érkezik, hogy részesei legyenek a több száz éves tradicóknak, melyek a bizánci, a velencei és a nyugati hagyományok harmonikus kereszteződése.

A főváros három filharmonikus zenekarral büszkélkedhet. A legöregebb zenekar az "Öreg" (Paleá) 1840-ben alakult, majd 1890-ben létesült a "Mántzarosz" végül 1980-ban a Kapodisztriasz Filharmonikusok. A korfui hagyományok szerint Nagyszombaton délelőtt 11 órakor kerül sor az "Első Feltámadás"-ra, amikor is megszólalnak a harangok és felhangzik a Feltámadt az Isten, ítélkezni című zsoltár, hirdetve Jézus feltámadását, majd a főtéren álló házak ablakaiból potyogni kezdenek a "bótisz"-ok (agyagedények, különböző méretben). A képen látható kancsók a túristáknak és a hazaiaknak szolgálnak, mert a kancsótörésben részt venni jó mulatság, a hazaiak számára pedig egyenesen kötelező :) Azért "első", mert a hagyományok szerint szombaton éjfélkor ünneplik a Feltámadást, míg Korfun kétszer. A kancsók ablakon való kidobálása eredetileg velencei hagyomány. A velenceiek az új év napján régi tárgyakat dobáltak ki az ablakon, hogy szimbolikusan helyet adjanak az újnak. A korfuiak megtoldották ezt a hagyományt az agyagedényekkel (tavasz az új termés érkezését jelenti, tehát összetörve a régi agyag tároló edényeket helyet adtak az újnak, az új termésnek), vallási magyarázattal körítették és készen is volt a korfui látványosság, amely ma is ezreket vonz a szigetre Húsvét alkalmából.
According to the corfiot traditions on Holy Saturday at 11 am is happening the so called "First resurection", when the bells starts to peal proclaiming Jesus's resurection, and from the windows of the houses on the main square corfiots start to dropp down clay pots of different size (so alled botises). On the photo are pots for tourists and corfiots, because as an attendant to participate in breaking pots is fun, and for the corfiots is almost required :)
It called "first" because according to the traditions primarily the Resurection is celebrated at midnight on Saturday, while in Corfu twice. Throwing the pots from the windows originally is venetian tradition. The Venetians on the New Year's Day used to throw items out the window to give a symbolic space for the new things coming with the new year. The corfiots added to this tradition the clay pots (in clay pots they used to stock the crop, so with spring it was necessery to replace the old pots with new for the new harvest by breaking them), garnished it with religious explanations and the corfiot attraction was ready, which still attracts thousands of visitors every year in Easter period.

| A Szent Szpiridon templomból nem Nagypénteken, hanem másnap, Nagyszombat reggelén, a kilenc órai mise után indul a körmenet. Ez a legrégebbi körmenet, melyet mind a három filharmonikus zenekar egyszerre kísér, és további érdekessége az, hogy a sziget védőszentjének, Szent Szpiridonnak a földi maradványait is körbehordozzák a menetben, közvetlenül Jézus koporsója mögött. From the church of St. Spyridon the procession does not start on Good Friday, but the next day, on Holy Saturday morning, after the mass at 9. It is the oldest procession in the town, accompanied by the three philharmonic bands, and more interesting is that the mortal remains of the island's patron, of St. Spyridon are also taking part in the procession, immediately behind the coffin of Jesus. |
